Donut Squad: Destiny of the Donuts

In a dark future, humanity is in the clutches of AI, enslaved by their fitbots whose algorithms govern both their waking and sleeping hours. Defy those wellness algorithms at your peril. Needless to say the eating of donuts is a heinous crime punishable by DEATH! However, at the crucial moment when sentence is being passed along comes a donut and it transpires that the saved person is Frances and her rescuer is Anxiety Donut.

Said Donut leads Frances to the Donuts’ secret base but has difficulty locating it. Eventually though she meets up with what’s called the Donut Resistance and Frances learns that they have invented a time machine that can take them back to before the invention of those fitbots, so their creation doesn’t happen and thus, history is saved. (Does that remind readers of any famous stories, I wonder.) Before undertaking any time travelling though, a group of Donuts wants to spend months calibrating and testing the invention but are forced into accelerating their plan because it’s been detected. Will the nightmare come to pass or can that plan succeed against the odds?
