Through workshops, training and resources, the commitment to stand up against racism and promote inclusion has been the aim of Show Racism the Red Card for about thirty years. Now to further this commitment comes the publication of Tackling Racism Together, a new anti-racism handbook for youngsters in KS2 and beyond, written by award-winning author A.M. Dassu.
By means of real-life stories, practical example and a wealth of engaging activities, readers are encouraged to question, to think critically about the world around them and to develop empathy.

The writer adopts an honest but optimistic approach that it’s hoped will help youngsters understand that meaningful changes frequently begin with everyday actions that have their roots in respect, kindness and inclusion.

Education plays a crucial role in tackling prejudice and having read and discussed the book, students should feel empowered to stand up against all forms of racism and do all that is feasible to challenge it. If only I’d had a copy many years back when I was deputy headteacher in a primary school and the school caretaker made racist remarks about some of the parents collecting their children. Of course I challenged what he said but a book such as this would perhaps have wielded more power than my words alone.

I’d like to see this book, with Mia Saine’s coloured illustrations, becoming a vital resource for classrooms, homes, sports clubs and other places where communities come together.
